The MapUs roadmap to successful Digital transformation

We often get asked how you create a roadmap to digital transformation. With MapUs, the roadmap is pretty much laid out in front of you – you just have to know how to read it. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to achieve and sustain digital transformation using MapUs in 5 steps.

Introduction: The Digital transformation cycle

There’s no set definition of what a digital transformation is, but our many years of experience in the field has led us to an understanding of digital transformation as a cyclical process. One where you constantly grow and learn and never stop being curious about what digital potential remains untapped.

In other words, before you even begin the process, think of digital transformation as a continuous project, where the goal isn’t just about strengthening your digital capacity in one go, but about fostering, anchoring and sustaining a digital mindset

Step 1: Define your purpose

One of the things that excite our users the most about MapUs, is that it makes digitization and digital transformation feel accessible and empowering. They’re often eager to start right away. But if you don’t have a clear goal to steer you, the process can easily become more overwhelming than exciting. That is why the first step of any digital transformation is defining your purpose, beyond just wanting to strengthen your general digital capacity. Be specific about the outcomes you want to achieve, e.g.:

Step 2: Kickstart the digital dialogue with MapUs

When you’ve defined your purpose, it’s time to begin working actively with digital competence by having your organization complete the MapUs self-assessment. Because our assessment is based on self-reflection and creates a shared experience, it naturally lends itself to kickstarting the digital dialogue in your organization.

Your organization will suddenly have a shared language, with which to talk about digitalization and we strongly recommend that you encourage that conversation. In our experience, the most successful transformations happen when you let your employees use their new vocabulary to talk about how digitalization impacts their lives, both professionally and personally. Workshops and webinars where the employees get to reflect on their digital strengths and weaknesses can thus be a great way to support the growth happening in step 2.

It’s important to keep stimulating and encouraging the digital dialogue, if you want to ingrain a digital mindset in your organization and in the individual employee. Two concrete examples of ways to do this could be:

Step 3: Let the data guide your strategy

After spending some time fostering digital dialogue and instilling a digital mindset in your employees, you should redirect your focus to the big picture and the actual data generated from the assessment. Step 3 will often be carried out in the context of Management, HR or Digitalization and is all about figuring out how the MapUs data can inform and support your digital strategy.

The great thing about MapUs at this step, is that our powerful data motor does all the work of gathering, analyzing and visualizing the data for you, in a way that makes it easy to identify strengths and weaknesses. All you have to do is interpret the analyses and select the results that you find most meaningful to work with going forward. It’s important to emphasize that once the data has been collected, the only limitation to how you can use it is your imagination. Below, we’ve gathered some of the most common ways to let the data help you unlock your organization’s digital potential:

Step 4: Fostering growth

When you reach Step 4, it’s time to put your strategy into action and begin educating your employees and helping them grow their digital capabilities. There are numerous ways to do this such as employing an LMS system, creating courses and seminars or perhaps tutorials. When working with MapUs, the resource module is a great element to utilize strategically in this phase. It lets you create a direct link between the digital competences and the specific resource an employee needs to seek out, encouraging them to take action.

Resources can be categorized didactically, taxonomically or perhaps like we’ve done it in the MapUs resource catalogue – examples (why is this competence relevant to me), benefits (what do I get out of being good at it) and exercises (how do I improve).  Either way you choose to do it, the point is that the employee should be met with resources that make sense, that motivates them to learn and that gives them specific instructions on how to begin improving.

Step 5: Completing and restarting the cycle

This final step is about regrouping and looking ahead. When you’ve wrapped up your initial efforts to strengthen the digital competence level in your organization, you need to assess whether they’ve been fruitful or if you need to rethink your strategy. MapUs provides a great starting point for this evaluation with the benchmarking tool, which allows you to gather data on your organization’s progress from the outset up to now. And just like that, the cycle has been completed and restarted.

The information you gather in this step will be the knowledge you use to finetune your strategy, which encompasses a new set of efforts to educate your organization and continue to get smarter together. This continued growth happens when you keep documenting the development across your organization, and it can take on many different forms. You might be inspired to do a yearly check in your digital progress, or perhaps the insights gathered in step 3 will inspire you to recruit new people. Either way, a digital transformation with MapUs will keep you curious and empowered to unlock the full potential of your organization.
